Strikethrough and underline without a formatting toolbar

Many places where we write every day — social media bios, comments, chat apps, usernames, plain-text email and game nicknames — have no bold, underline or strikethrough button. This generator works around that by building the style into the characters themselves. Unicode includes combining marks that draw over or under the previous character: a long stroke overlay for strikethrough, a low line for underline, a double low line for double underline and a macron above for overline. The tool places the chosen mark after every letter, so the line runs through the whole word and stays in place when you copy it.

Several variations are available: a long strike, a shorter strike, a slashed style, crossed letters, dotted and wavy underlines, plus underline and overline. Tick "Don't mark spaces" if you prefer the line to break between words. Popular uses include crossing out a price in a sale post, showing an edit in a comment, writing a joke correction or creating a distinctive display name.

Small caps, superscript and subscript

Beyond lines, the tool converts text to small capitals (ꜱᴍᴀʟʟ ᴄᴀᴘꜱ), superscript (ˢᵘᵖᵉʳˢᶜʳⁱᵖᵗ) and subscript (ₓ₊₁ or H₂O). Superscript is handy for exponents such as x² or m³, footnote markers and playful tiny text; subscript is useful for simple chemical formulas such as H₂O or CO₂. Unicode only defines these forms for some letters, so characters without an equivalent are kept as normal text, and each card shows how many characters could not be converted.

Compatibility and privacy

Because the result is plain Unicode, it can be pasted almost anywhere. The appearance depends on the font: combining marks may sit slightly differently on iOS, Android and Windows. Screen readers might announce the marks or ignore them, so keep important information in normal text. Everything is generated locally in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded or stored.

Frequently asked questions

How can strikethrough work in places without formatting?
The tool adds a Unicode combining character, such as U+0336 COMBINING LONG STROKE OVERLAY, after each letter. The line is part of the text itself, so it survives copy and paste into apps that have no formatting buttons.
Why do some letters have no superscript or subscript?
Unicode only defines superscript and subscript forms for some letters. For example, there is no subscript b, d or g. Characters without a form are left unchanged and the card tells you how many were skipped.
Can I remove strikethrough from pasted text?
Yes. Paste it into the input and click "Remove lines from pasted text" to delete the combining marks this tool adds.
Does it work on Facebook, Instagram, X and Discord?
Yes. The marks are standard Unicode, so they display in most modern apps. How neat the line looks depends on the font; some fonts draw the stroke slightly higher or lower.
