A private spell checker that runs in your browser

Most online spell checkers send your text to a server. This one does not. When you pick a language, the page downloads an open-source Hunspell dictionary — the same format used by LibreOffice, Firefox and many other programs — and checks your words locally with the nspell engine in a background worker. Contracts, medical notes, unpublished articles and private emails can be checked without leaving your device, and the page keeps working offline once the dictionary has loaded.

Eleven languages are available: English, Italian, Spanish, German, French, Dutch, Portuguese (Brazil), Swedish, Polish, Ukrainian and Russian. Hunspell understands how words are built from stems and endings, so it recognises inflected forms such as plurals, verb conjugations and case endings without needing every form listed separately. That makes it especially useful for languages with rich grammar, such as Polish, Ukrainian and Russian.

    Fix mistakes quickly

Possible misspellings are underlined in the preview, and each unique word appears in a list with how many times it occurs. Suggestions are calculated in the background and appear next to each word; click one to replace every occurrence in your text at once. If a word is correct — a name, a brand, a technical term — choose Ignore to skip it for this session, or "Add to dictionary" to remember it for that language on this device.

By default, words written entirely in capitals (acronyms such as NASA or GDPR) and words that contain digits are skipped, because they are rarely real spelling mistakes. Web addresses and email addresses are skipped too. Curly and straight apostrophes are treated the same, so "don’t" and "don't" are both accepted.

    Limitations

A spell checker looks at words one at a time. It cannot tell whether you meant "form" or "from", and it will not fix grammar or punctuation. Very new words and rare proper names may be missing from the dictionaries. For the best result, read your text once more after the spelling is clean.

    Frequently asked questions

    Which languages are supported?
English (US), Italian, Spanish, German, French, Dutch, Portuguese (Brazil), Swedish, Polish, Ukrainian and Russian, using open-source Hunspell dictionaries — the same kind used by LibreOffice and Firefox.
Is my text uploaded to a server?
No. The dictionary is downloaded once and spell checking runs in a background worker inside your browser. Your text never leaves your device.
Why does the first check take a few seconds?
Large dictionaries such as Ukrainian, Polish or Portuguese contain hundreds of thousands of words and complex affix rules. They are processed once per visit; later checks are fast and the files are cached for next time.
    Does it check grammar?
No. It checks the spelling of individual words. A correctly spelled word used in the wrong place, such as "their" instead of "there", will not be flagged.
Where is my personal dictionary stored?
Words you add are saved in your browser's local storage for that language only. Use "Clear my dictionary" to remove them.
